2nd NHS League event

On Saturday, November 17, 2012, 8701/8701X again traveled out to Mount Michael for the second day of the Nebraska High School league. We had a great morning. Team 8701 was undefeated for the day (5-0-0). This means 8701 is 8-2-0 overall. Team 8701X had some difficulties with their intake early on, but still managed to come out 4-1-0, making them 7-3-0 overall. There will be a third event on December 15, which 8701 will not attend. At this event the rest of the teams who don't have 10 matches yet will compete again. After this we will know how the standings are for the elimination rounds on January 12, 2013!! Great job so far to all the teams in the league!
Once again, the event page is here.

Papillion-La Vista VRC Tournament

Saturday, November 10, 2012 was the first tournament of the year in Nebraska! Teams 8701 and 8701X did extremely well. After some great qualification matches, 8701 was ranked first overall (3-0-0) and 8701X was ranked second overall (3-0-0). In alliance selections 8701 picked 8701X. We then selected Team 656A Sasquatch, from Crete High School to round out the the #1 alliance.
Our alliance breezed through the quarterfinals, and after a long wait, competed in the semifinals. Unfortunately, we had some technical problems and lost some very close matches.
We had some good news after that however, as Team 8701X was awarded the Design Award! Congratulations to all the teams who competed at the tournament and good luck the rest of the year!!

First VEX event of the year

Competition season has arrived! Teams 8701 and 8701X traveled to their first event on the morning of November 3, 2012. The first day of the Nebraska High School league was held at Mount Michael. We had a few mistakes, but we learned a lot from the competition setting about we are going to need to change on our robots. Both teams still did very well, currently 8701X is ranked 5th overall, and 8701 is ranked 6th. We hope to move up in the standings next time, November 17th.

Pictures will be up in the 'Media' section shortly.

The page for the Nebraska High School League can be found on robotevents.com here. This page also contains all rankings.

Success at River City Robotics

On Sunday, September 30, 2012, Jordan Estee, Alex Zimmerman, and Greg Tracey of 8701 went as part of the WHS contingent to the River City Robotics competition. Along with our good friends from Omaha North (1064B), we were the only teams to use the VEX system.
The challenge involved building a 14" wide robot on-site to complete a challenge. The challenge was to drive into a large-scale model of a cow and gather a whole manner of things that the cow "swallowed". (This included stones, wire, screws, bolts, nails, and plastic bottle caps.) The robot had to be able to then bring out as many objects as possible in five minutes. Our robot had some technical difficulties, but still performed at a very high level. Westside VEX took second place overall to Omaha North!
Pictures will be posted shortly on the 'Media' page.

Team Members meet with foundation board

06/27/2012

On Tuesday, June 12, 2012, Team members Jordan E., Cory J., and Greg T., along with teacher Mr. Ratliff met with the District 66 school board. The presentation opened with a PowerPoint of the teams experiences last year. Mr. Ratliff talked about the benefits of VEX, including improving technical and communication skills. Next, the team answered questions and demonstrated the new game for 2012-2013, Sack Attack. They discussed their ideas and speculations on the new game, and what they believed to be the more challenging aspects; as well as showing off Team 8701's current Sack Attack robot. The meeting came to a conclusion with one of the Board members getting a chance to operate a simple holonomic test bot.
